how residents contribute

Merchantville, like America, depends on the hard work, good will, and clear communication of its citizens to prosper. Let's discuss some of the ways we can help.

  1. Attend borough meetings so you understand issues and can contribute your good ideas early in the process. Meeting schedule is generally:
    • Borough Council: 2nd & 4th Monday of each month, 7:30pm at Borough Hall
    • Planning Board: 2nd Tuesday of each month, 7:30pm at Borough Hall
    • Historic Preservation Commission: 1st Tuesday of each month, 7:30pm at Borough Hall
    • Board of Education: 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month, 7:30pm at the library
    • Shade Tree Commission: 2nd Saturday of each month, 9:30am at Borough Hall
  2. Volunteer.
    • PTA- (? best contact?)
    • Public Events Committee plans town-wide celebrations year-round and can always use volunteers. For information call 662-2474 x121 or email events@merchantville.com
    • Vote. It's not just a privilege; it's a duty.
    • Respect the law, including: drive slowly, put your trash out after 3pm, put a quarter in the meter, call in your overnight guests' cars, curb your dog (a charming euphemism), mow your lawn, pay your taxes, paint your porch, etc.
    • Run for office--if you have intelligence, integrity, creativity, thick skin, and lots of energy.

Please send me email (mvillecitizen@yahoo.com) if you have updates or corrections to this list. Teachers and PTA volunteers, please let me know the best ways for parents and other residents to help out at the school. Other volunteer opportunities? Let me know! Thanks.

Thanks to M-ville Cruiser, who suggests:

"re: becoming more involved, consider becoming a member of the Public Events Committee. This is a borough committee that does the grunt work for the Christmas Parade and Town Birthday Celebration. The Recreation Commission is also a good one - oversees park areas, runs summer program for kids and Easter Egg Hunt. If you have a green thumb consider the Garden Club or the Shade Tree Commission."

Come out to the Planning Board meetings. Hear for yourself the bizarre and contradictory plans of AST. Try to get a straight answer of Mr. Tedesco. Try to get a complete answer from Mr. Brickley.

Then go to a Borough COuncil Meeting. See if you can ask a question of the BC that Mayor Brennan doesn't make faces at and then tell you he doesn't know the answer. It's like the old joke about the public employee who said "it would be a great job if I didn't have to deal with the public."
