Let It Snow!

I can remember digging snow on top of wet leaves a couple years ago. That was a disaster. I'm happy to see that public works has stepped up its game since then.

I remember a snow storm in the early '50s that cut power lines for a week and had drifts requiring front-end loaders to reopen roads. We camped out at neighbors having fireplaces.

What's this headline "the on-going snow storm"? It came and went in less than 18 hours.

I was one of the complainers last year about the leaf pick failures and the poor snow plowing job. So it's only right to say--Well Done on both counts to our public works folks! Thank you and best wishes to all for 2011.

The following notice about recycling appears on the Merchantville.gov site:

"FRIDAY DEC 31 NEW YEARS HOLIDAY (no pick up)… RECYCLING THURSDAY DEC.30"

Since many residents will probably not see that notice, it would be nice if you would inform your neighbors of the recycling pickup this THURSDAY.

Anonymous 12/22 must not live in Leaf Collection Zone 2.

The online leaf pickup schedule says Zone 2 leaves will be picked up the weeks of Nov. 1st, Dec. 6th, and Jan. 17th. It also says that “Public Works will post signs in your area announcing when leaves may be placed in the street for collection” and emphatically reminds us: “DO NOT PLACE LEAVES IN STREET UNTIL YOUR BLOCK IS POSTED!!”

I don’t believe signs were put up anywhere in Zone 2. I know there have NEVER been signs on East Cedar. Many residents defied the stormwater regulations and put their leaves in the street anyway. As I recall, about a week before Thanksgiving, the leaf vacuum picked up the piles of leaves on E. Cedar, and even raked and picked up a small pile of leaves I had placed on the grass at curbside.

The next Zone 2 pickup was scheduled for the week of Dec. 6th. I had placed piles of leaves on a 40-ft. section of grass between the sidewalk and the curb -- not in the street until signs were posted, according to the rules. On Saturday, Dec. 4th, a leaf vacuum picked up the leaves in the street on one side of E. Cedar only. This time the guy with the rake did not rake my leaves into the street to be vacuumed up. I would have done that myself if I had known leaves would be picked up that Saturday.

The leaves are still there, now under a foot of fallen snow plus whatever the plow put on top of that. Unless we have a thaw between now and Jan. 17th, that’s where they will remain.

Correction: I meant to type Anonymous 12/28. Sorry.

I'm out of town and preparing to return tonight. How much snowfall did Merchantville get during the storm? Will I be able to park my car on the street overnight without getting a ticket if my driveway is full of snow? I haven't had time to get a street parking permit during police station business hours yet.

These are the instructions I have for overnight parking on the street without a Borough sticker. (Effective hours are 2AM-6AM)

Call Boro Hall at 662-2474. After reg. business hours, listen for instructions for overnight parking. You'll be told to dial extension 116 and you'll have to give the car description, license #, and the location of where the car is parked, along with your name, address, and phone number.

Worse case, if you can't get instructions on the phone tonight, why not just write your name, phone number and address on a card, along with the reason you're parked on the street, and put it on the dashboard? That would satisfy the spirit, if not the letter, of the law.

In my opinion, this is a law that should be taken off the books as soon as possible. All it does is irritate people.

How do new residents learn the procedures anyway? Do they have to get a ticket first?

We had about a foot of snow.

Thanks! I called and left a message thanks to your instructions. I learned about the rule through my landlord. Definitely cannot make it into my driveway if it's covered in a foot of snow...

Re: Leaf Pick-up

I'm in Zone 1. There were no signs for leaf pickup at any time this year.

People just put leaves in the street as they fell from the trees. The leaves sat for about 2 weeks and one day they were vacuumed up.

Of course, I bag all my leaves for composting through the year and also took (with permission) leaves from two neighbors for composting. If you run the leaves through your leaf blower (vacuum them into a bag) they will compost faster.

Well Gail, if you took the law off the books, what would you do to solve the irritating conditions which caused the law to be put on the books?

The law is not there to cause irritation. It is there to diminish irritation.

Where's RN? said...

Our Dec 6 leaf pickup came on the 22nd without notice. Gilmore still has a 4-foot high pile of leaves near Chestnut.

What happened to RN? She paid another $3,500 to Philadelphia for leaf and snow removal but last week Mr. Mutter mentioned they were broke.

Will RN have to pay more? And how did she do in Merchantville with her hometown leaves and snow?

A foot of snow in the drifts, maybe.

The actual amount was about 6".

Exaggeration like this must be from cruiser. ;D

Streets still better plowed in Philadelphia. Leaves picked up in Merchantville (on my street) just days before the snow. Plow came by once on Sunday night. Merchantville still snow covered (even with the melting). As always...once I can get to Rt 130 all is well and over the bridge was fine too. Didn't work Monday...Tuesday was fine. Thanks for your concern!

This is a shout out to Mayor North who comes round with his snow blower and clears his neighbors walks.

Thanks Mayor.

It appears snow removal was done well this storm, with that being said there are still huge piles of leaves on my street which have not been picked up nor was it ever posted. It's a little annoying as I live on a one way street with parking on only one side. I am not quite sure what schedule the Highway Department was on this year but for leaf removal they get an F

Who is RN? What are we talking about here?

Last year after one of the storms I said that the streets in Philly were cleared better than the streets in Merchantville. I've lived in Merchantville for over 20 years and our street is rarely cleared and often icy and dangerous at it's intersections (which are major ones).

Someone called me out this year and wondered about how I was doing with my drive (I'm sure it was out of concern and not just to start controversy)

I don't live near the mayor. He doesn't clear my street, sidewalk, or driveway.

My leaves were cleaned but there was no sign announcing when. It was, when it happened, a total surprise.

RN signing off and going to work...in Philly. Hope to see you enjoying Merchantville in the form of McFarlan's, Foam, The Merchantville Diner, Aunt Charlotte's etc. and not in the ICU where I work.

Happy New Year!
